The Interactive Flute Retreat - an all-inclusive event for ADULT musicians to let go and explore new music, concepts, and connections in a unique setting. Entering the 6th year, you are invited to join us!

2020 Interactive Flute Retreat will once again feature PROJECT Trio! Spend four days with this inspiring ensemble who bring new perspectives to classical music while advocating for enhancing music in education. www.projecttrio.com

Throughout the four day event, attendees raise their confidence through a multitude of activities, engage with the flute community, and the community of their beautiful temporary home, collaborating with, high caliber artists that take the time to help them rise to their next level. Whatever that level may be.

Interactive Flute Retreat Session Topics with PROJECT Trio*

Interactive Flute Retreat with PROJECT Trio part 2. this year, will focus on movement in music; expression and technique; exploring color, creating vibrancy; modal and microtonality; and of course. beatboxing and improvisation. There is a lot to learn. Come if you dare.

All courses will be held at a private residence, nestled on the beautiful South Haven, Michigan. A quaint beach town right on the Lake Michigan shores, 30 minutes south of Holland, famous for their tulip festival, and 2 hours from the bustling Chicago. Experience the beauty of music in South Haven.

FRIDAY, JULY 24, 2020: SONORITY

1:00 Welcome to the 2020 Interactive Flute Retreat! House Opens for Retreat attendees.

Retreat guests are encouraged to arrive at 12pm, check-in, tour the facilities, and get situated before classes begin.

3:00 Introduction and Session 1 : Movement in Music

The time to meet PROJECT Trio, and introduction to movement in music through rhythmic activities that foster music appreciation, ear-training, and improvisation while improving music abilities. This approach connects music, movement, mind, and body.

6:30 Dinner

Guests are treated to delicious dinners by our in house chef throughout the weekend.

7:30 Ensemble Rehearsal

PROJECT Trio has invited retreat guests to join them during their concert in the park via two flute choir selections! This year, we will incorporate extra rehearsals with the guys to prepare for the concert in the park.

SATURDAY JULY 25, 2020

Roots Yoga has been with us since the beginning. Yoga sessions are tailored to the retreat and the needs of attendees. Please notify Sue at hospitality@interactivefluteretreat.com if you have any concerns. Let us treat YOU to special activities throughout the retreat!

8:00 Morning Yoga: Music and Movement Class

Part 1: Learn techniques to increase your breath, flexibility and strength with Roots Yoga.

10:00 Session 2 Expression and Technique

Expand your musical perspective. Deepen the connection to music through expression, technique and curiosity. This class aims to expand your aptitude, musical knowledge and audience reach. Participants will learn, in various combinations, how to engage with music within, the audience, and the next generation of musicians through teaching.

11:30 Lunch: 30 min session-Greg Patillo released a Beatbox Book!

Grab lunch and join Greg on the lower deck as he personally guides you through his newly released book sharing highlights and practice tips with you. Guests are in for multiple stories throughout the weekend.

1:00 Music and Movement Part 2

Part 2: Increase your musical breath, flexibility, and stamina with your instrument.

3:00 Dress Rehearsal

Dress rehearsal with PROJECT Trio, retreat guests, and young students.

6:00 Light Dinner

7:00 PROJECT Trio in Concert at Stanley Park:

This FREE event is located in the heart of South Haven. Attendees perform WITH PROJECT Trio this year!!

9:00 Private Reception

Join us for a private reception with PROJECT Trio, and appetizers while toasting the sunset. This event is open to retreat guests and sponsors who make this event possible each year.

SUNDAY JULY 26, 2020

Group activities are for those who wish to increase their activity level. Choices may include bike riding on the Kal-Haven trail, open sea kayaking, or even sailing.

8:00-9:30 Group Activity with Sue

2020 adventures are on their way. It’s going to be great!

10:00-12:00 Session 3: Musicianship Class-ornamentation and modal theory

Learn the top five ornamentation techniques and how the relate to each time period through music. then learn of the false dichotomy between traditional harmony and modality. This session will encourage participants to listen, learn and apply old and new musical concepts that enhance musicianship in all styles.

12:00 Lunch with Eric!

Another opportunity to grab lunch and join one of the PROJECT Trio members. This time Eric will share his musical experiences and background with you.

2:00 Session 4: Musicianship Class 2 - microtonality, colorful harmonies, and complicated rhythms

Explore the realm of tonality intertwined with modality by nature. Through colorful harmonies and complicated rhythms, participants are fully immersed in the microtonality movement found in todays culture and movies. Allow your taste to gravitate towards unexpected sounds. Suvert your expectations and catch your attention of concepts of the “old” vs the “new”.

10:00 Session 5: Using Improv to Stay in Shape

Identify the three keys to staying in shape. PROJECT Trio shares tips, unreleased tools, and techniques to stay in shape for your life in music.

12:00 Lunch: with PROJECT Trio!

Peter, Eric, and Greg’s last bow serenading you. Jam out and join in as they play their favorite pieces with the group for one last hurrah.

2:00 Wrap up and House Closes…leave with lasting memories
